LORISES - Lorisidae Slow Loris Nycticebus coucang
• Distribution
The Loris lives in the Northern provinces of Vietnam, such as Cao Bang, Bac Thai, Hoa Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue. In the world they are found in Burma, South-East Asia and the South of the Hymalayas.
• Habitat
They live in a wide range of habitats. It’s inhabits light forest, tropical forest, pine forest and mixed forest.
• Behaviour
The Loris is a nocturnal animal and it has very big eyes to see clear in the dark. During the day when they sleep they bury their head in their belly, so that why they are often called “shy animal”. The Loris is a primate, but unlike the most primates the Loris species are very slow and quiet. They live in small family groups, which contains three to four individuals. In the wild they mainly eat fruit, bird eggs, young birds and insects. In the Hanoi Zoo they are fed all kinds of fruit, insects and eggs. The breeding season is from October to December and the gestation period is 180 to 193 days. One to two cubs are born in each litter. The average lifetime of this species is 12 to 15 years. The Slow Loris is listed in the “Red Data Book for Vietnam”.
