• Distribution

In Vietnam: from North to South of Vietnam.
In the world: India, South of China, Malaysia and across South-East Asia.

• Habitat

The Stump-tailed Macaque has adapted to a wide range of habitats from tropical rainforest, evergreen forest, mixed forest, woods on limestone mountain and open forest.

Behaviour

Stump-tailed Macaques live in forest areas. They spend most of their time on the ground and are mainly active during the hot times of the day. They go up to the trees or caves to sleep. They live in big groups from 10 to 30 individuals. The group is divided in sub-groups, which contains a few females with theis youngs and some other young animals. The sub-group is led by a male who is the father of all the new born macaques in this sub-group.
In the wild they eat all kind of fruits, leaf-buds, tubers and insects. In Hanoi Zoo they are fed fruit, sweet potatoes, rice and insects.
The breeding season for this animal is from February to October. The macaque reaches its sexual maturity at an age of two years. The gestation period is around 7 to 8 months and a female gives birth to a single baby. The average lifetime of this macaque is 15 to 20 years.
This macaque is listed in the “Red Data Book for Vietnam”. In Hanoi Zoo they breed succesfully.
