Hanoi Zoological Gardens is a state owned institution which is part of the Transportation and Urban Public Works Service of Hanoi and takes care of several city gardens and Thu Le park which indicates the zoo. Hanoi Zoo was founded on 6th August 1976 according to decision number 905QD/TC of the Hanoi People's Committee.
Up to now, Hanoi Zoo is the first business of Transportation and Urban Public Work Service with more than 300 employees. it is divided in 6 different departments, 8 different branches and one directly depended Breeding Centre.
The Hanoi Zoo has several projects running. In general the projects based on conservation and research have priority, but nowadays we are really occupied with developing "Me Tri – Trung Van Animal Park", a semi-wild park in the countryside.
Hanoi Zoo has been able to establish many links with research and zoological institutions, both within Vietnam and around the world. Such links are vital for an exchange in conserving and protecting wildlife.
Originally known as Bachthao Gardens, Hanoi Zoological Gardens changed its name and moved to the location of Thule Park on the 6th August 1976. The current site covers an area of 21 hectares, 6 of which are taken up by the lake.
